SURFACE PREPARATION & SUBSTRATE CONDITION

Steel

  • Blast clean to Sa 3 / Sa 2.5 (Swedish Specification)
  • Blasting profile (Rz): 40 – 70 microns
  • Heavily pitted steel is not acceptable

Environmental Conditions

  • Substrate temperature: at least 3°C above dew point, but below 50°C
  • Relative humidity: above 50%

MIXING

  • Do not open packing until immediately before use
  • If settling is observed in base or hardener, loosen with hand stirrer, then use power-driven stirrer
  • Add the hydrolysate (hardener) into zinc slurry (base) under continuous stirring
  • Strain mixture through 30–60 mesh screen
  • Maintain constant agitation until batch is depleted

Mixing Ratio (by volume)

Component Ratio
Zinc Slurry (Base) : Hydrolysate (Hardener) 1 : 1

APPLICATION

Air Spray

Parameter Specification
Recommended Thinner T-144
Volume of Thinner 10 – 25%
Nozzle Orifice 1.5 – 3.0 mm
Nozzle Pressure 0.3 – 0.4 MPa (≈ 3–4 atm; 43–57 psi)

Airless Spray

Parameter Specification
Recommended Thinner T-144
Volume of Thinner 10 – 25%
Nozzle Orifice 0.48 – 0.64 mm (0.019 – 0.025 inch)
Nozzle Pressure 15 MPa (≈150 atm; 2100 psi)

Important Notes

  • Maintain constant agitation of mixture
  • Spray gun must be at correct distance to achieve wet and smooth coating
  • Thinner quantity must be adjusted carefully for optimum film formation
  • Coating must appear wet and smooth immediately after application
  • Refer to Field Guidelines for Inorganic Zinc Rich Coatings

Limitations

  • Not suitable for immersion in:
    • Alkaline liquids (pH > 9)
    • Acidic liquids (pH < 5)
      unless suitable topcoats are applied

OVERCOATING PROCEDURE

  • Zinc-rich coatings are porous → pinholes may form due to solvent popping
  • To minimize pinholes:
    1. Apply a mist coat as first pass
    2. Allow entrapped air to escape
    3. Then apply a full coat
  • Prolonged exposure before top-coating leads to white rust (zinc corrosion products)
  • Must be removed completely before applying subsequent coats

SAFETY INFORMATION

  • Avoid inhalation of solvent vapours and paint mist
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes
  • Provide forced ventilation in confined areas
  • Even with ventilation, use respiratory, skin, and eye protection while spraying
  • Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before use

STORAGE & PACKING

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Follow local regulations

Packing

  • 20 litres
