DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Surface Preparation

General

  • Surfaces must be dry, clean, and free from contaminants.
  • Remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease as per SSPC-SP1 solvent cleaning.
  • Surface should be checked and treated as per ISO 8504 prior to priming.

Blast Cleaning

  • Steel: Abrasive blast clean to minimum Sa 2.5 (Swedish specification).
    • If oxidation occurs between blasting and application, re-blast the surface.
    • Recommended profile (Rz): 40–70 µm.
  • Galvanized steel: Sweep blast to roughen the surface and remove any zinc salts.
  • Heavily pitted steel: Not acceptable for coating.

Application Conditions

  • Substrate temperature: Minimum 3°C above dew point and below 50°C.
  • Relative humidity: Above 50%.
  • Provide good ventilation in confined areas to ensure proper curing.

Mixing

  • Supplied in two packs:
    • Liquid Component (Hydrolysate)
    • Powder Component (Zinc Dust)
  • Do not open packs until ready to use.
  • Stir the liquid (hydrolysate) thoroughly using a power stirrer.
  • Add zinc dust gradually into the hydrolysate under constant stirring.
    • Do not reverse order — it may cause lump formation.
    • Strain the mixture through a 30–60 mesh screen.
    • Maintain constant agitation during application.
  • Once mixed, consume within the working pot life.
Mixing Ratio (by weight) Hydrolysate : Zinc Dust = 48.5 : 51.5
Induction Time None
Pot Life @ 30°C 4 hours

Application

Brush / Roller

  • Not recommended.

Air Spray

Parameter Specification

Airless Spray

Parameter Specification
Recommended Thinner T-144
Volume of Thinner 10 – 25%*
Nozzle Orifice 0.48 – 0.64 mm
Nozzle Pressure 15 MPa (150–190 atm; 2100 psi)

Note: Depends on required film thickness and application conditions.

Cleaning

  • Do not allow the product to remain in hoses, guns, or spray equipment.
  • Clean all equipment immediately after use with Thinner T-144.

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

  • Maintain proper spray distance to achieve a wet and smooth coating.
  • Inorganic zinc silicate primers are sensitive to humidity:
    • Minimum relative humidity 50% is required.
    • Below 50%, curing is severely retarded.
    • Promote curing at low humidity by spraying fresh water after 4–6 hours and keeping the surface wet until fully cured.
  • Recommended film build: 50–75 µm/coat.
    • Above 125 µm may cause mud cracking.
    • Remove cracked areas completely and reapply.
  • Not suitable for immersion in alkaline (pH > 9) or acidic (pH < 5) liquids without appropriate topcoats.

OVERCOATING AND TOPCOATS

  • Ensure complete curing before overcoating.
    • Verify as per ASTM D4752 (MEK rub test): 50 double rubs with cloth soaked in Thinner T-144 or MEK.
    • If coating remains unaffected, curing is complete.
  • Surface must be clean, dry, and free from zinc corrosion products before topcoating.
  • White rust (zinc corrosion) must be removed before recoating.
  • Apply a mist coat of subsequent layer to minimize solvent popping.
  • Recommended topcoats:
    • Epoxies
    • Chlorinated rubber
    • Acrylics
    • Polysiloxanes
    • Heat-resistant silicones
    • Other systems as advised by Asian Paints PPG representative.

PACK SIZE

  • 23 L (Hydrolysate: 20 L, Zinc Dust: 21 kg)

STORAGE

  • Shelf life: At least 6 months at 30°C in original unopened packs (inspect thereafter).
  • Store in a cool, dry place according to local regulations.

REGULATORY INFORMATION

Property Value

SAFETY INFORMATION

  • Avoid inhalation of solvent vapours or paint mist and contact with skin/eyes.
  • Provide forced ventilation in confined or stagnant air conditions.
  • Always use respiratory, skin, and eye protection while spraying.
  • Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before use.
